The 5th ShanghaiTech-SIAIS Bioforum was successfully held November 13th to 16th at ShanghaiTech University, with the theme of “Advances in Integrative Biology of Cellular Processes.” The main topic discussed was breakthrough Technological Advances in Protein Research (Cryo-EM, Optogenetics, DNA-encoded Chemical Libraries).
Over 500 attendees from universities, research institutions and corporations from around the world took part in the BioForum. University Council Chairman Professor Li Ruxin gave opening remarks, welcoming the speakers and participants and then Professor Ernesto Carafoli, chairman of this year’s BioForum and professor at ETH Zurich and Padova University, expressed sincere gratitude to the university for its strong support and assistance. Professor Yan Nieng (Princeton) gave the keynote speech, discussing “How is electrical signal generated? Structural and mechanistic investigations of NaV channels,” while In the plenary speech sessions, Professor Sriram Subramaniam (Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute), Professor Ernst Bamberg (Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, Germany),and Professor Yu Jin-Quan (The Scripps Research Institute) introduced recent breakthroughs and directions in the fields of Cryo-EM, Optogenetics, DNA-encoded Chemical Libraries. There were 25 presentations during the four-day Bioforum.
Attendees exchanged opinions on the more than 50 posters displayed at the poster session and the organization secretary gave a souvenir to each participant who submitted a poster.
As an annual first-class symposium, ShanghaiTech-SIAIS BioForum has successfully provided a high-level exchange platform for delegates to strengthen innovation and cooperation between academia and industry. This year, the School of Life Science and Technology (SLST), SIAIS, and iHuman Institute will join efforts to organize a joint Bioforum on November 10-14, 2019, to discuss the exciting fields of Cellular Mechanism in Health and Disease.
