From August 8 to 12, the 4th Photon Science Summer School of ShanghaiTech University (PSSS) was virtually held. This year’s summer school was co-organized by the Center for Transformative Science, the School of Physical Science and Technology, and the Graduate School, with the focus on the field of materials science and its application. 20 experts and scholars from 9 institutes and 805 students gathered in the cloud.
Yin Jie, Executive Vice President & Provost, delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. As a cutting-edge detection technique, large-scale scientific facilities play a critical role and have strategic significance in achieving the self-reliance of science and technology of the country. Yin Jie introduced the current construction status of the large-scale scientific facility cluster in the region of Shanghai Zhangjiang. He encouraged the participants to make full use of this precious training opportunities to lay a solid foundation of the necessary knowledge and skills for synchrotron radiation source.
Photon science experts including Zhao Zhentang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and Feng Donglai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) were presented at PSSS as key lecturers and teaching members. The participants, mainly graduate students and scientific researchers, were from 157 academic or scientific institutes worldwide, with their research fields ranging from materials science, physics, optics, chemistry, to environmental science and other fields. There were totally 20 PSSS lectures, covering various topics such as large-scale scientific facilities, accelerators, and detection technique methodology. The lectures put synchrotron radiation and free electron laser devices as the core contents, introduce the performance and properties of relevant facilities in China, and systematically explain how the large-scale scientific facilities advance research in the fields such as materials science. Moreover, based on different materials characterization methods, the teaching members also gave in-depth courses to the participants on basic principles and application examples of various detection techniques.
The PSSS has already been held for four years since 2019, with more than 1,800 participants got trained and wide appreciation from lecturers and participants. Now, it has become a brand new image of ShanghaiTech in the field of photon science in China.
