On December 2, the first International Session of ShanghaiTech Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit (techIES) was held as a hybrid event, with both in-person and live stream options. Deputy Director of International Affairs Dr. Nie Yan delivered the opening speech and Assistant Director Ms. Xiao Yin hosted the event. The International Session has attracted 13 projects from six countries. Eventually, eight projects from Finland, Singapore, the Netherlands, Turkey, and United States entered the final competition.
First, on behalf of the Vice President Dr. Jiang Ge, Nie Yan extended a warm welcome to all judges, contestants and audience. After a brief review of the past four techIESs since 2018,he pointed out that under the forward-looking design and strong support of ShanghaiTech, the scale of the techIES has been growing rapidly, creating a platform for faculty, students and partners to showcase their innovative ideas. This year, an International Session was initiated for the first time at the 5th techIES (focusing on biomedicine, biomedical engineering and intelligent healthcare), further boosting international cooperation in innovation and entrepreneurship.
During the competition, each participating team introduced their innovative technologies, products and the potential for tech transfer through roadshow videos recorded in advance. Then, during the Q&A session, the jury consisting of investors and senior executives from well-known investing institutions, ShanghaiTech professors and other experts had in-depth exchanges with the contestants, and put forward valuable comments and suggestions. In the end, three projects from the United States, Singapore and the Netherlands won the first, second and third prizes, respectively (funded by ShanghaiTech University Education Development Foundation).

The successful hosting of the International Session has initiated a global platform at ShanghaiTech for innovation—therefore enhancing the international impact of the techIES and reflecting ShanghaiTech’s commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship. With a broader international vision, ShanghaiTech will continue to accelerate the transfer of scientific and technological achievements, and effectively contribute to the innovation-driven development in China.
