On September 3, a delegation led by Takuya Fukumoto, Deputy Director of the Innovation and Environment Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), visited ShanghaiTech University. Vice President Jiang Ge met with the guests.
Takuya Fukumoto introduced the background and main functions of the METI Innovation and Environment Bureau, emphasizing its aims to promote industry-university-research integration and support the development of Japanese startups. He also expressed his hope to learn from the successful experience of ShanghaiTech in technology transfer.
Jiang Ge introduced the university’s innovation and entrepreneurship system. He pointed out that high-level basic research is a crucial driver for translating scientific output into practical applications. Additionally, ShanghaiTech has established a specialized patent operation team centered around the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT), providing robust support for incubating startups.
Yang Yu, Associate Dean of the School of Entrepreneurship and Management (SEM), said that SEM has not only built an advanced teaching and research platform but also put considerable effort into course design, aiming to fully stimulate students’ innovative thinking and entrepreneurial potential.
Wu Di, CEO of Deemos Technologies (a spin-off of ShanghaiTech), shared the company’s development journey and cutting-edge GenAI model. He also reviewed his personal experiences of studying, researching, and starting a business at ShanghaiTech as an alumnus (B.Eng. ’19, M.Eng. ’22).
Before the meeting, the Japanese delegation visited CorrectSequence Therapeutics, another spin-off of ShanghaiTech, as well as the Multidisciplinary Artificial Reality Studio (MARS) of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST).
Through this visit, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of the entrepreneurial education and innovation ecosystem of ShanghaiTech. Both parties expressed their desire to further promote the transfer of university research outcomes and enhance international cooperation among startups.
Other members of the delegation included Soichiro Ono, Director of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) Beijing Office; Hiroshi Yamashiro, Representative from NEDO headquarters; and Daisuke Takamura, Deputy Director of the Japan External Trade Organization Shanghai Office; and Takuya Tateishi, Consul of Japan in Shanghai. Participants from ShanghaiTech University included Yu Jingyi, Vice Provost and Executive Dean of SIST, as well as representatives from SEM, OTT, Office of International Affairs, and spin-offs of ShanghaiTech.
