Fabrizio Ortu hails from Sassari (Sardinia, Italy). Fabs studied Chemistry at the University of Sassari, where he obtained his Laurea Magistrale in 2009. He moved to Nottingham in 2010 for his PhD studies on s-block organometallic chemistry with Prof. Deborah Kays. After PhD, he moved to Manchester in 2014 to work with Prof. David Mills, Prof. Steve Liddle and Prof. Richard Winpenny, on lanthanide and actinide chemistry. In 2019, Fabs joined the University of Leicester as a Lecturer and in 2023 was promoted to Associate Professor.

讲座摘要：
For the best part of the 20th century Group 2 chemistry was limited to the use of organomagnesium reagents in synthesis. The last 30 years have seen a true renaissance of main group chemistry, which has led to remarkable applications of the alkaline earth metals, such as various uses in synthesis and catalysis, and their isolation in unusual oxidation states. Within our research group we are interested in developing new organometallic and coordination chemistry of these metals, with a focus on the discovery of new fundamental properties and reactivity profiles that could lead to applications in sustainable synthesis. Herein we will present some of our recent research discoveries in Group 2 chemistry, focusing particularly on our quest towards low oxidation state compounds and the use of mechanochemistry.
