简介(Brief Introduction):
报告人简介:
Rui Ma received his bachelor’s degree from Jilin University in 2008 and his doctorate from Tsinghua University in 2014. During his Ph.D., he studied at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI-PKS) in Germany from 2010 to 2012. From 2014 to 2020, he conducted postdoctoral research at Yale University. In September 2020, he joined Xiamen University as a Nanqiang Scholar and became an associate professor in the College of Physical Science and Technology. His research focuses on the mechanics of the cell membrane and the morphogenesis of the cellular cortex, which are closely related to biological processes such as clathrin-mediated endocytosis and cell division.

讲座摘要:
My talk will be divided into two parts. In the first part, I will discuss our recent work on modeling the morphology of the cellular cortex during cell division. The cellular cortex is a thin layer of actin network assembled and tethered beneath the cell membrane. During cell division, it exhibits complex flow patterns and undergoes significant deformation. To investigate the mechanical conditions necessary for successful cell division, we applied a hydrodynamic theory of active surfaces. Our findings suggest that when the stress generated by molecular motors within the actin network is isotropic, precise positioning of the contractile ring at the cell center is essential for division. However, if the stress is anisotropic, self-organized cell division can emerge. We also compared our theoretical predictions with experimental observations and found strong agreement. In the second part of my talk, I will briefly introduce our work on membrane deformation induced by protein condensates formed through liquid-liquid phase separation.
